La Gran Piedra (the Big Rock) is a treasure of the Cuban east.
Gigantic mass of stone, witness to the volcanism of the Paleogene, as well as all the geology of the Sierra Maestra - the impressive geological formation. You can find here the most impressive flower species including begonias, birds of paradise, dahlias and more.
La Gran Piedra is a home for such wonderful animlas as woodpeckers, thrushes, cartacubas, hawks, doves, mayitos and the Cuban national bird, the tocororo.
The 452 steps leading to the Gran Piedra are well worth the climb to reach the volcanic rock more than 1200 meters above sea level.
